The Inspiring and Kind Poetry of Michael Faraday: Scientist Extraordinaire
In this ode to Micheal Faraday, I use original documents and his own words to explain how, without any mathematics, he managed to inspire modern Chemistry, modern Physics and the popular science movement of the 1800s.
"I am no poet..." is from Faraday (1858) Jones The Life and Letters of Faraday (2010) p. 398
"Deep veneration of Mrs. Marcet" is from the same source page 394.

"Electromagnetic Fields and Waves" by Lorrain & Corson (2nd Edition) contains a problem in chapter 2 "Electrostatic Fields in a Vacuum" (2-19) on J.J. Thomson's "Plum Pudding" model of the atom. It asks to (A) find the force on an electron; (B) describe its motion; (C) the frequency for a 1 Angstrom-sized atom; and (D) compare this frequency to that of visible light. A rather thought-provoking question in an Undergraduate E&M textbook!

Nice presentation, but you leave the impression that Faraday did this one thing and then spent the rest of his life in a forced and dreary occupation of lens making. He had many many other major accomplishments, including the discovery of electromagnetic induction in 1831. In 1833, he was appointed as the first Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

Keep in mind that RCA didn't like to pay royalties! Some of the things that Sarnoff did may not have been the most ethical, but was legal in terms of running RCA. He had invested to much in AM radio only to have it replaced. Especially by a system that his company didn't own.

Thanks Kathy. I love your videos about science history. When I was a physics undergraduate many years ago one of the things that I found frustrating was that very little information was given about the historical context in which discoveries were made and so it was difficult to imagine what scientists of the time were thinking and trying to do. We would be presented with something like Schrodinger's Equation without having any idea of where it came from. On a small matter, I don't think you pronounced Einstein's daughter Lieserl's name correctly - I think it's more like "lee-zel" - if you have seen the film "The Sound of Music" there is a character with that name.

🎯 Key points for quick navigation: 00:00 *🌌 Einstein's Revolutionary View of Light* - Einstein's photoelectric effect equation stemmed from a groundbreaking perspective on light, which merged wave and particle theories. - Einstein's initial skepticism towards Planck's ideas and subsequent exploration of the photoelectric effect marked the beginning of quantum mechanics. - The convergence of Einstein's personal life, scientific curiosity, and theoretical breakthroughs during this period laid the foundation for modern physics. 02:22 *🤰 Mileva's Challenges and Einstein's Professional Journey* - Mileva Marić, Einstein's partner, faced personal and academic struggles, highlighting the societal barriers for women in science during the early 20th century. - Einstein's employment challenges and personal circumstances, including Mileva's pregnancy, underscored the complexities of their relationship. - Despite these obstacles, Einstein's eventual employment as a patent clerk in Bern provided him with the opportunity to pursue his scientific interests. 05:38 *📝 Development of Einstein's Quantum Theory* - Einstein's exploration of Phillip Lenard's experiments and his interpretation of ultraviolet light's effects on electrons paved the way for his quantum theory. - The concept of light quanta, or photons, emerged from Einstein's hypothesis, challenging conventional notions of light as purely wave-like. - Einstein's formulation of the photoelectric effect equation, incorporating Planck's constant and the concept of quantized energy, demonstrated the dual nature of light and established a cornerstone of quantum mechanics.
